Michael Berger was born in Southern California, and embarked upon his study of Eastern Arts as a youngster, beginning with the practice of meditation at age 14. He was a competitive athlete and began practicing martial arts beginning in 1978. In 1983 he graduated from the University of Utah, and relocated to Japan to further his martial arts/cultural studies. In the 30 years to follow, he would spend a cumulative time period of nearly 10 years living overseas, 7 years of which included living and studying in Japan and China. He became a Diplomate in Shiatsu-Anma Massage, a certified Reiki Therapist, and a 6th degree black belt (karate), before deciding to further his studies of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Los Angeles, California. In 2009 he relocated to Hangzhou, China to attend Zhejiang Chinese Medical University 浙江中医药大学, where he was awarded the Zhejiang Provincial Scholarship for “Superior Student”, and received his Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Tuina in 2012, one of few foreigners to accomplish this feat. He is a Council Member and USA Representative of the Specialty Committee of Chinese Medicine Manipulations for the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS), Subject Matter Expert for the National Certification Commission, co-author of "Jin's Three Needle Acupuncture Therapy," an editor of the book “Four Classics of Chinese Medicine”, (People’s Medical Publishing House, 人民卫生出版社) and the author of two books and numerous articles on martial arts. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Life Cultivation and Rehabilitation at the prestigious Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nanjing, China.
Michael received his black belt in Japan at the Japan Karate Association World Headquarters in 1984, and studied Qigong and related martial arts in the Wudang Mountains of China. He has taught martial arts and police tactics to such organizations such as the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the Italian National Special Police, and the Venezuelan Contra-Terrorist Forces. As an educator, he has taught multiple disciplines internationally at all levels, including classes to physicians at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Zhejiang University (PRC), and has been a speaker at several major international conferences both in China and in the USA. In addition, he is a Zen Buddhist, musician, philosopher, actor, poet, and traveler and has been featured in many films, books, magazines and news articles worldwide. He currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah where he operates a practice and continues to teach martial arts.
